The work of the artist Christian Bournique could be described as the intersection of classical beauty with contemporary concept. Born in 1971 in Lyon, France Bournique attended The Ecole de Design Nantes Atlantique, in Nantes. It was here that he developed a penchant towards the figure. His work is heavily influenced by his unique view of art and history. Working in a variety of mediums, he subtly integrates into his paintings what he refers to as “French decorative aestheticism.” The artist is most typically known for pared down figurative scenes in which the nobility of restraint is apparent. He consciously eliminates the strength one sees at times with color, and the backbone of his work rests largely in the strength of the design itself. Specific areas of his compositions are sensitively modeled while other areas are more graphic, or flat. The artist states, “My objective is to give the viewer a balance of recognition and abstraction. The complexities of my compositions are eliminated and the soul of my subject remains to converse with the viewer.” He is an experimental artist, enjoying the opportunity to employ a variety of surfaces from glass, wood, metal and plastic. The scope of Bournique’s oeuvre demonstrates his ingenuity and technical virtuosity. They are deftly articulated paintings, both thoughtful and thought provoking, which leave the viewer with the desire to identify with, and understand the subjects before them. Wildly prolific, his imagery and influences are unbounded by traditional constraints. The artist's methodology allows his work to maintain its integrity and reinvented simplicity in all orientations. What remains for the viewer is a pure expression of the artist. Bournique has traveled extensively, and his studio work has been informed by these experiences. Today the artist maintains a studio in Paris.
