The paintings of the artist Michel Brousseau present an avenue of how to transcend the ordinary in the most unassuming manner. Born in Nantes, France, Brousseau spent a great deal of his youth in the coastal towns of Bordeaux. It was here that those images and experiences formed the catalyst for his paintings today. Early in his youth he acquired a law degree and before taking the path as “an artist” he worked for a brief period as a journalist and political activist. Unfulfilled with his work, he returned to his greatest love, painting, and has since worked full time creating works close to his heart. His paintings have no hidden agenda other than to entertain the viewer with the simplicity and beauty of the subject before them. Inspired by the classical painters (particularly Joaquin Sorolla) he applies that aesthetic to his own work today. At times his compositions incorporate an entire scene, while at other times he juxtaposes his subject matter against a flat, raw background to give it a more graphic sensibility. His paintings are technically accomplished works which are subtly perfected by a deft, nuanced touch. Crisp, clear, and sharp in their rendering he shares with the viewer an image so precise that it enlivens the other senses. His paintings are a product of memory, invention, and what he feels is the obligation of the artist. Today the artist maintains a studio in Cap Ferret, France.
