Timur Akhriev
Timur Akhriev (b.1983 Vladikavkaz) invites the viewer to inhabit his world, by sharing with us things which he is sensitive to. Attracted to a variety of subjects, he draws the viewer into a personal exploration of his playful and dynamic energy. Akhriev began his journey with a formal training in art at The Iagonsin Fine Art School before immigrating to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Here he continued his studies at the University of Tennessee with additional training at the Florence Academy of Fine Art in Italy. As an artist, he does not beat the viewer over the head with rhetoric. Instead he forges a visceral connection for the viewer. Capitalizing on a rigorous, classical training, at times he is straightforward and direct, while at other times he conjures a dreamlike and surreal ambiance. With marvelous dexterity and sensitivity, the artist intelligently fuses that which is obvious and apparent, with that which is imagined. He is operatic at times in his skillful use of color which tends to serve as a key element to his work. Characterized by skillful and confident brushwork, there is a surface quality to his painting which is both physically and emotionally luscious, opulent, and complex. The artist states, “My early career efforts were primarily objective observations of the world through still life and plein-air painting. I am moving towards a more symbolic visual practice, but still using the vocabulary of realism”. Layers of cultural richness and life experiences inform the artist. His paintings are places to visit for solace, meditation and sanctuary. Today the artist maintains a studio in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
