The appropriated imagery of the artist Valerio D’ Ospina are charged with a sensory quality that only a truly talented artist is capable of imparting. Born in Taranto, Italy (1980) he studied at the acclaimed Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, before acquiring his MFA.
Working in oils on panel, he is deeply responsive to the timeless appeal of traditional painting, yet at the same time, he treats his subject with a sense of adventure. Upon looking at his work, it is obvious to the viewer that there is a tension between actuality and illusion, description, abstraction and invention. A common characteristic throughout much of his painting is the use of dynamic lines, and brushwork which creates a blurring effect, pulling the viewer into the composition as if they were a part of the work itself. D’Ospina can be considered an “explorative artist” who is most attracted to the cityscape, transportation systems, and industrial settings. What at times seems mundane becomes satisfying, fresh and intriguing under the skillful eye and hand of the artist. Painting in a restrained palette, his efforts result in works which are original, energetic and elegant upon their own terms.
The work of Valerio D’Ospina has been featured in prominent art publications which have ranked him as one of the top contemporary artists of his genre in America today. His work is the subject of art lectures in universities and academies of fine art world wide, and is included in fine art textbooks. His paintings have found homes in prominent private, as well as significant corporate and museum collections. Today the artist maintains a studio in Philadelphia.
